With some of the heavy hitter failing to deliver in fixture week 4 many fantasy premier league managers have been left scratching their heads at the prospect of another fruitless week as fixture week 5 see’s many of the big names face off against each other. With some big names in big games fantasy managers may do well to consider some of the less conventional names ahead of fixture week 5 and with that in mind our fantasy coaches here in the managers room have taken their search a little “outside of the box” and come up with a few differential options for the upcoming fixtures.
Demba Ba (Newcastle) £6.4 Million Fixture: Norwich (Home)
The Senegalese striker is back to his best and on a scoring run again with 3 goals in 4 games, a fantasy manager favourite in the early part of last season he bagged 2 against Everton on Monday night taking his tally to 19 points. He was on fire in the early part of last season and even with the Africa Cup Nations he still managed to return 16 goals from 34 games. Ba’s stats for the season are decent with half of his shots on target and hitting the back of the net. This week the Geordies welcome the Canaries to St James in a fixture they won last season 1-0. Norwich have yet to kick start their season with 3 draws and an opening day mauling 5-0 away at Fulham. They were not best on the road last season and when a striker is scoring it’s hard not to back against them.
Jermain Defoe (Tottenham) £6.4 Million Fixture: QPR (Home)
The Spurs front man is another player who is benefiting from being given the starts this season having scored 3 goals from 4 played. Against Reading last week he put in a display which would have delighted many a fantasy manager adding another 2 to his tally and earning 9 points; that is if you already have him in your team! In the Premier league last season he scored 11 goals in 25 appearances, of which only 11 were starts. Currently Defoe seems to be AVB’s first choice in the front line and with 22 points so far is already returning a good investment on £6.4 million. His stats in front of the nets are good with just under half of his shots on goal hitting the target. In week 5 Spurs face the R’s who put in a good display against Chelsea where there was more news for no handshakes than the actual game. With Bale also starting to find his form again this week we could see another good display for the inform Defoe.
Shane Long (West Brom) £5.8 Million Fixture: Reading (Home)
The Baggies forward has shown some early form in the league and is currently on 12 points; he opened his account against Everton in a classy 2-0 win at home and earned 6 points for his efforts. With only a small number of managers opting to bring in the Irish international and a £5.8 million transfer cost now could be time to take punt on the Irishman to score this coming weekend; especially with Odemwingie missing this game following his UFC style kick and sending off against Fulham. The Baggies welcome Reading to the Hawthorns this week; to be honest they looked all over the place at the back when they played Spurs and were lucky to only lose by 3. West Brom have toughened up under Steve Clarke and at home have seen off both Merseyside teams without conceding a goal. With a good midfield behind him Long is overdue a stand out performance and the points that go with it.
So there you have some early forward options for you to consider as we weigh up your options ahead of fixture week 5 of The Irish Times Fantasy Premier League.
