Chelsea: Fantasy Football Gold?

There is only one place to start with Chelsea’s summer transfers and that is with regard to a certain, Eden Hazard. Hazard has joined Chelsea in a big money move but all the signs are that he will be worth every penny. Pace, power, strength and with a keen eye for goal, Hazard has got what it takes to a star in England. Hazard was in scintillating form for Lille last season. In 38 league appearances he managed a staggering 20 goals and 16 assists.

The Belgian’s preferred position is to play as the classic number 10 but can be equally as effective out wide. He has come in to Fantasy Football at £9.5 million, which makes him one of the most expensive midfielders in the game. However, if his past performances are anything to go by, Hazard will be worth the hefty price tag.

It will be interesting to see how Di Matteo fits both Hazard and Juan Mata into the same side. Mata was highly effective in playing behind the main striker last season and bagged himself 6 goals and 16 assists. If Hazard can emulate Mata’s first season at Stamford Bridge, he is sure to be in many managers starting elevens.

Of course there is also the small Brazilian matter of Oscar, with the Blue’s confirming yesterday that they have secured his services for a fee thought to be in the region of £25 million it seems that it is not only fantasy premier league mangers who will have a midfield headache as Roberto Di Matteo will soon find out!

Chelsea have also confirmed the signing of Marko Marin, a 23 year old German international. Marin plays as a winger and is seen as an eventual replacement for the aging Florent Malouda. Marin was injured for a lot of last season but still made 21 appearances for his club side Werder Bremen.

However, he only managed a disappointing 1 goal and 5 assists. Like his fellow debutant, Hazard, Marin got off to the perfect start in scoring on his Chelsea debut during their pre season tour of America. Marin will most likely start from the bench this season and with a price tag of £7 million, I wont be rushing to make space for him in my team just yet.

With Chelsea all set for a double gameweek in gameweek 1 there is much to consider as you pick your team, for me at the moment I think two or three Chelsea players are a must for gameweek 1 but which ones?

Don’t forget if you register your team for The Irish Times Fantasy Premier League  before Saturday you could be in with a chance of winning €200 for the best team name!
