    It’s a curious time of year in the world of professional golf.  When so many lesser lights are busting their balls in the hope of retaining their playing rights for next season those at the top table traverse the globe in their private jets and hoover up all the riches thrown their way.

    Having been given the rather dubious honour of writing the inaugural sports blog, I awoke with horror to the news that Darragh Ó Sé had already questioned the future of this International Rules malarkey after the tame exchanges between Ireland and Australia in Limerick on Saturday.

  • One small step for man, one giant leap for the Sports Dept

    When our Dear Leader canvassed opinion on how irishtimes.com could be improved earlier this week the message coming from the masses was loud and clear. The single, most effective way to enhance the website for each and every one of our readers was simple. The answer, it appeared, was Metedata. And plenty of it. 

    Not having an inkling what metadata was – hey, who does? – the online editor scrolled further down the page where his eye was drawn to a solitary, lonely voice calling for a sports blog. Always one to champion the cause of the little man, the online editor’s interest was piqued. Plus it ticked boxes on so many levels. (more…)
