Brian Cowen’s dominance of the Fianna Fail election campaign continues apace, following yet another strong performance in the Treasury Buildings this morning where he attacked Fine Gael and Labour’s spending plans.

Admittedly, Cowen has a point that the two individually have made commitments far beyond the €2.9 billion they have allocated for extra spending, in addition to the €2 billion they have agreed to spend on hospitals, cheaper housing, et cetera.
Alas, though, the same argument could be made about Fianna Fail’s figures since at the end of the day they will have to agree a post-election programme for government with someone if they are to stay in Government Buildings.
Yet again, the Taoiseach was not visible this morning. The man who is on all the party’s posters is rarely to be seen at the major events of the campaign, yet Fianna Fail chiefs will argue that he is their best asset. Best assets are not usually kept so well hidden.
A number of attempts to question Cowen about the Taoiseach’s tax affairs produced little fruit, with the Minister batting away inquiries by saying that he had no doubt but that Mr Ahern had acted in good faith.
Still, observers can once again wonder about Mr Ahern’s handling of the affair. He did not have to bring up the tax issue on Sunday. Having done so, he appears to have been surprised that it dominated questions from the media when he turned up at Blanchardstown.
Why he should be surprised is anybody’s guess…..

Cowen is slowing assuming the position of FF’s biggest asset. His performances at party HQ and on ‘The Week in Politics’ have been extremely good.

One can only wonder what the polls would be like had Ahern stepped aside in September last year and Cowen was Taoiseach.

welcome to the blogosphere, Mark. I have a major problem with Cowen. Over the course of his de-facto fronting the FF campaign he has only reinforced the impression that he is a bully who is more than capable of playing fast and loose with facts.

if fianna fail lose this election, they will need to reflect on why that is. My view is that it will happen as a result of a more open electoral “market” where voters pick and choose parties with less loyalty.

If that is the reason then a candidate for leader needs to be able to appeal well beyond the FF core. AS a party designed to win elections, FF will know that and be wary of Cowen’s capacity to transcend that barrier with the public.

That wariness gives Dermot Ahern (among others) a great chance of taking the leadership from him. As I mentioned, it all depends on how the election goes and the manner in which they lose (if they do so).

The location of Mr cowans statement highlights where FF’s loyalties liy.
Treasury holdings and many other developers have enjoyed years of amasing great wealth while the ordinary PAYE worker has been reduced to a slave by the corrupt and arrogant FF government.
Bertie and the rest of his guans don’t care about the ordinary people in this country, this is evident in the way he has allowed costs to go up while services get worse.
Bertie conned the electorate last time and deserves to be given his marching orders this time.
I am not a big fan of Enda kenny, however i believe he can only do better than the smug and arrogant bertie.

Its being said that Brian Cowan is an obvious replacement for Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach -its usually men who say this - a vox pop is needed here -try asking women -he has no sex appeal and is incredibly gruff and as for charm ?

I think Brian Cowen is an excellent Minister who gave a brilliant budget for this year and I wish him the best of luck in this years election.

I think Cowen, while a intelligent person, comes accross as much too aggressive, to rude and too unpolished. He cannot hold a candle to Richard Bruton.

If FF lose the election Cowen will be blamed as he has fronted most of their press conferences.

I think Brian Cowen is a very good, well educated and well respected person whom most irish people look up to for his charisma and for his communication with the irish people on delivering an excellent budget and helping the most vulnerable in our society.

I have Brian Cowen backed way back at 16/1 to be the next Taoiseach after election dust settles. Six days to go now and I still feel the money wasnt wasted, although felt that Taoiseach comprehsnively outclassed Enda Kenny in leader’s debate on all issues bar Health.
