Answer » - hi, ,y son was has dyslexia and was assessed after he graduated this year. He has received his first choice course. The college he got an offer from is not in the DARE scheme. I feel he would be more suited to his 2nd and 3rd choice in a college that have more facilities for his disability. It was not his fault that he was diagnosed late in fact, he had finished 14 years of education before this was picked up which i find is appalling. Have you any suggestions what he should do please? thanks
Answer » - In march 2012 I missed the deadline for the dyslexia DARE scheme and in a result I didn’t recieve any of my chosen corses from the huge increase! Can I reapply next year through the CAO with DARE or is there any decent PLC courses what will be worth my while?

- My son got his 5th choice in Ucd, his first four choices were history based in Trinity , he had 520 points and thought he was well covered as last years points ranged from 485 to 515, when they offer in the second round do they go to your second choice or do they look at all your choices. Also I can’t seem to find what the actual 2012 points were with the joint subjects. seem to find the 2012
Answer » - I got 540 points in the leaving and was hoping to do physiotherapy in UCD. However the points for this course skyrocketed an extra 20 this year leaving no hope for that! However my second choice is also physio in the Royal College of Surgeons which rose to 545 points this year but this course was not offered to all applicants who scored 545 points. I am getting one subject rechecked and all going well, will gain another 5 points. My question is if I do manage to get an extra 5 points in the recheck, is it possible to then get into the Royal College of Surgeons for physiotherapy or are they in any way compelled to offer a place on this course if after the recheck the correct points were obtained? Bearing in mind of course that all applicants that scored 545 originally did not get offered a place.

He really wants his first choice, Engineering in UCD and is only 5 points short so hopefully he will get offered this during the second round offers. Our query is, if he accepts the course he was offered, when doing round two offers does the CAO preference students that have not accepted any course? Answer » - having just completed the Belgian equivalent of the Leaving Certificate, I have applied for various arts faculty courses in both UCD and TCD. As Belgium has not suffered the same points inflation which seems to be happening in Ireland and the UK this year, and indeed does not have a standard national exam system, is there any provision for appealing directly to the colleges concerned should their calculation of my points equivalence result in me falling short of the minimum points required? I was ranked third in my leaving class, and I speak 5 languages fluently, but it seems to me that may not be enough for any course in either UCD or Trinity due to how they translate Belgian results…

Answer » - i got 465 points in my Leaving Cert (i was expecting much higher), but will not be offered my first choice on Monday, physiotherapy and i’m now looking at my second choice, science and am not sure whether or not i want to spend 4 years studying this or spend one year repeating the LC and trying for physio again. i’m also looking into doing a postgrad to qualify as a physio (if i choose to accept science), and although i know i can do this in scotland or england, i would rather do this at home, in ireland or northern ireland. is this possible and what qualifications would i need to apply? at the end of the day though, i’m still not 100% sure whether or not i want to go on and spend so long studying physio if there will be no job prospects when i qualify, and i’m even less sure about science. i feel that if i accepted science it would be purely because i would get a job from it and because everyone is telling me that i should study it, not because i have any interest or burning desire to dedicate 4 years of my life to it. having said that, i’m not very well informed in all the areas that can be studied in science and can’t think of many job prospects other then lab work or teaching (both of which i do not want to do). could you fill me in? at this stage i think i might be better off repeating, trying to increase my points and decide what i want to do in university. help!
Answer » - what time on Monday do the CAO offers go online?
Answer » - My first choice on my CAO is 500 points and a restricted course. I passed the interview which was held earlier in the year and was told that I was ‘eligible for consideration for a place’ on this course, as the places allocated would be determined by points. I got 485 in my Leaving Certificate and am planning on appealing 1 or 2 papers that I feel are marked down. Should I come up with the 15 points I need, will I be offered a place on this course after the recheck results come out?
Answer » - My daughter has 315 points, she has a love of Irish and only wants to teach. We were hoping she would get St Patrick’s college in Thurles but last year that was 340pts. She is a worker. He would like to try for one of the courses mentioned in today’s paper ie Post Leaving Cert. course in the coming academic year to enable him to access the CAO course he wants next year. Answer » - I got 60 points more than I needed for my first choice of course, but I got an E in higher level Maths. The course cites that Maths is not a requirement. While it is my understanding that having failed Maths means that I have ultimately failed my entire Leaving Cert, some people believe otherwise. Will I be accepted, or will I have to resit the Maths exam in June?

Medicine
- In quite a predicament! I was hoping to study Medicine this year, received 580 points in leaving cert and a score of 169 in Hpat, leaving me with an overall score of 725, 12 points short of Galway. I have considered, like many others, taking a year out to focus on repeating Hpat and hopefully improve my score and apply for a place in 2013. However, I fear that I will not be able to improve my Hpat score that substantially and I am now considering repeating the Leaving Cert also to give me the best possible chance. Would it be worth my while to repeat the Leaving Cert also?? I have been informed that it is very difficult to increase leaving Cert points over 580! Very Confused!!!
Answer » - I am considering repeating the Leaving Cert in 2013 in order to gain entry into Medicine. Can I use my Hpat score from this year and combine it with my points next year? If so will it be the percentile( points as percentile I got in 2012) or the points? Also for repeating would I have to repeat english, irish and maths? Thank you for your help

Answer » - Hi, I have a bit of a different situation. Basically, although I’m Irish, I’ve been attending an American style international school my whole life in the UK. Unusual, I know. Anyhow, I sent in my American style grades to the CAO – so SAT I, SAT II, GPA, AP – and expected them to be converted to LC points. Well, today I woke up to no offers, although I had been told by admissions officers (who I talked to, given my unusual circumstances) that I had very ‘competitive’ marks. I think the CAO has screwed up and not really processed my application. What can I do? I’m worried that because of some kind of administrative thing, I’ll be denied college this year…

Answer » - Hello, I recieved 460 points in the Leaving cert recently. My number one CAO choice was Economics and German in TCD. I see the points for this course in the first round was 495. I am wondering if this is likely to decrease into my range for the second round next week as last year, the minimum was 435. I understand that the number of students sitting Higher Level Maths and the number applying to TCD has caused figures to rise. Failing that, my second option was Philosophy and German in TCD at 470. I am wondering what the chances of this course coming down to 460 is for next week and what is my chance of getting it? Thank you.

I went by the UCD undergraduate prospectus book 2012, which said I just need a pass in enlglish, irish and maths. Now I see on the website that they must be a minimum of a ordinary B3, which I did not obtain. Can i still get my coarse because i got the points? Also is it possible to do agricultural science for a year in UCD (my 2nd choice) and then transfer to science in UCD in the second year.

Although it was 510 last year, I fear that because of the extra points awarded for Higher Level Maths, which I did, the course will be beyond my reach. Answer » - My son only secured 310 in his leaving certificate. He needed 340 points for Arts in Galway. This is down as his 3rd choice as his 1st & 2nd choice require alot more points. In the meantime his 310 points will secure him his 4th Choice on his CAO. My question is if he does accept his 310 points course do you think there is any chance that he might be offered the arts course @ 340 in the 2nd round or it is too many points to have to move up. I just don’t know where to cancel accommodation that I have booked or not .

Answer » - if you resit the leaving can you carry forward any points from the 1st one
