Reader query: “Help, I have shin splints!”

A reader, and recent running convert, Dee Hart needs your help.

“I am a pretty good walker who felt the urge to run some weeks ago. My circumstances are such that I only get our Fri to Sun to exercise and as soon as my husband arrives home on Friday evening I am out the door be it walking originally and now attempting to run.

“I have been using the Couch to 5km app and love it, a little tougher than I thought to transition from fast walk to a run- my problem however is shin splints. Despite all my warming up and investing in another great pair of runners (Asics, i walked in a really great pair of Nikes but thought the runners were the prob with my first hint of splints)week 3, day 3 of the Couch to 5km, the splints became too much. I have not done any exercise at all since last Friday and the pain persists in my left shin- every now and then the right one gives me a twinge but the left one is a constant ache at this point.

“I have been warming up and down really well and know now that I need to give them as much rest as I can, it is possible that I am just not meant to run (I know a blasphemic suggestion on this site). I really really want to do this, I am 37 and as I said a really good walker (fast pace and distance no problem).

“Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks.”
