    Goat Breeding in Nyakatali Village

In December 2008, a group of 18 farmers in Nyakatali village were provided with three goats. The two females were local goats, but the male, Viktor, was a white Boar goat – a stronger, bigger breed originating in Botswana, with a higher reproduction rate and twice the meat yield.

The goats have since had six kids, and today the project’s organisers MK-SAP and Self Help Africa were taking one of the male hybrid kids to another village to begin the breeding project there.

“These hybrid goats can fetch as much as 360,000Kw (€60) at market”

30 goats were provided to ten villages when this scheme was first introduced. Since then, ten more villages have received male hybrid kids, offspring of the original Boar goats. Each of these villages will in turn donate a male hybrid kid to another village.

These hybrid goats can fetch as much as 360,000Kw (€60) at market. This compares to just 100,000Kw for a small local breed.

This project is similar to the pig rearing project running in Mtenguleni village. You can read more the pig rearing project here.
