Mulrooney: Quite numerous: Kilkenny-Midlands etc. Ir. Ó Maolruanaidh, servant of Ruanaidh; there were septs of this name in Fermanagh, Galway, Roscommon and Clare. See Moroney.
Roney: rare: Portadown (Armagh) etc. Ir. Ó Ruanaidh. See Rooney.
Rooney: Very numerous: all areas except Munster. Ir. Ó Ruanaidh (perhaps from first name Ruadhán, red-haired one). A sept of Down, they enjoyed a literary reputation and were widespread in Leath Chuinn (the northern half). However, in W Ulster and N Connacht, it may be a version of Mulrooney, q.v. IF.
