SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN

Kilmartin: fairly numerous: Roscommon-Galway-Clare, Midlands. Ir. Mac Giolla Mhartain (devotee of St Martin). Originally related to the O'Neills of Ulster, they were forced into Connacht in 17 cent. Also as Gilmartin and Martin. IF.
Mac Giolla Mhártain: (1) Gilmartin: líonmhar: Sligeach-Liatroim & rl. (2) Kilmartin: cuíosach líonmhar: Ros Comáin-Gaillimh-an Clár. Bhí an chlann bhunaidh suite i gClochar, Tír Eoghain, agus gaolmhar leis na Niallaigh. Brúadh go Connacht sa Phlandáil iad. D'fhéadfadh Martin & Martyn a bheith ar chuid aca, leis. An t-ainm Mártan, an-choitinn sa mheán-aois, de bharr an mheasa a bhí ag Gaeil ar Mhartan as Tours na Fraince.
Martin: Very numerous: all areas, especially Ulster. Ir. Mac Máirtín, Ó Máirtín, Mac Giolla Máirtín. The first name Martan was popular in early times due to devotion to St Martin of Tours, so it is partly indigenous. It also derived from English and Scottish settlers. IF.
Martyn: Quite numerous: Galway, Sligo etc. See Martin.
Máirtín: Martin, Martyn: an-líonmhar gach aird. Bhí siad chun tosaigh i nGaillimh go luath tar éis an Ionraidh - ba cheann de "Threabhanna na Gaillimhe" níos déanaí iad agus thuill cuid acu clú agus cáil, mar shampla, "Humanity Dick" Martyn (1754-1834) a shaothraigh chun danaracht d'ainmhithe a chosc. IF.
Ó Maolmhartain: Martin: féach Mac Giolla Mhartain.
Ó Martain: Martin: bhí an t-ainm seo i bhfeidhm sa mheán-aois agus bhí an chlann le fáil san Iar-Mhí sa 16 céad, ach is é an sloinne gallda, Martin nó Martyn, atá i gceist anois. Féach Máirtín, leis.
Ó Máirtín: rare: Galway etc. Ir.Lang. See Martin.
Ó Máirtín: Martin, Martyn: an-líonmhar gach aird. Bhí deabhóid do Naomh Martan de Tours, sa bhFrainc, ann in anallód agus tháinig na sloinnte seo i bhfeidhm. Craobh de chuid na Niallach i dTír Eoghain dob'ea Mac Máirtín. Féach Máirtín, leis.
