MacMahon: Very numerous: Clare-Limerick-Tipperary-Kerry and Monaghan-Cavan-Louth. Ir. Mac Mathghamhna, "bear-calf". Mod. Mac Mathúna. Two septs: one of Thomond (Clare) and related to the O'Briens; the other of Oriel (Monaghan). SGG, IF, GPN.
Mahon: Very numerous: South East, Midlands, Ulster, Connacht. Ir. Ó Macháin (Ulster); Ó Mócháin (Connacht). This latter seems to give rise to most Mahons in the South.MIF.
