SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN

Kenny: Very numerous: all areas, especially Galway. Ir. Ó Cionaoith, a number of septs, the chief being of Uí Maine (Galway). There was also an English family Kenny which became established in Galway in 17 cent, so all Galway Kennys are not necessarily of the Uí Maine. Elsewhere the name can stand for Mac Cionnaoith, Ó Coinne, Ó Coinnigh, Mac Giolla Choinnigh. MacLysaght examines this in detail in IF. See also SGG.
Ó Cionaoith: Kenny: an-líonmhar: Gaillimh faoi leith. Clann de chuid Uí Maine ach, aisteach go leor, shocraigh clann Sasanach, Kenney, sa dúiche chéanna sa 17 céad agus b'iad-san na tiarnaí talún san áit. Chomh maith leis sin, freagraíonn Kenny dos na sloinnte Gaelacha seo: Ó Coinne, Ó Coinnigh, Mac Giolla Choinnigh. Féach Mac Cionaoith, leis. IF, SGG.
Ó Cionaoith: rare: Dublin etc. Ir.Lang. See Kenny.
