SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN

Gavaghan: Quite numerous: Mayo-Sligo, S Down. Ir. Ó Gáibhtheacháin, (gáibhtheach, ostentatious). A sept of Uí Fiachrach (Mayo). Spoken language: Ó Gácháin, hence the form Gaughan, q.v. SI & SGG.
Gavigan: fairly numerous: Midlands, Roscommon, Donegal. Ir. Ó Gáibhtheacháin. This is now spelled Ó Gáibheacháin. (gáifeach means both flamboyant and terrible in the sense of "dangerous"). In Ulster we find the name MacGavigan, q.v.
Ó Gáibhtheacháin: Gavigan, Gavaghan: líonmhar: Connachta, Tír Chonaill, an Dún theas, Lár na Tíre; ach bhain an sloinne seo le dream a bhí ina gcónaí ag Cros Uí Mhaoilíona, Maigh Eo. Bhí Ó Gácháin orthu sa ghnáth-chaint - dá bhrí sin, Gaughan atá coitinn i Maigh Eo. Tá Mac Gáibhtheacháin ann, leis. Brí: gáifeach = péacach, ach contúirteach, leis. Sa litriú nua: Ó Gáifeacháin.
