SURNAME DICTIONARY/ SLOINNTE NA h-EIREANN

Creegan: Quite numerous: Cavan, Leitrim, Longford etc. Ir. Ó Croidheagáin, from croí, heart. There is some confusion in Connacht with Cregan, q.v. SI.
Cregan: numerous: Limerick, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Derry. Ir. Ó Criagáin, but originally Mac Riagáin, it is thought. SI.
Creighan: rare: Monaghan-Louth, Fermanagh. Ir. Ó Críocháin, possibly from creachán, a puny person. This was and remains a name of Oriel (Armagh-Monaghan-Louth).
Mac Criagáin: Cregan: líonmhar sa Mhumhain. Is cosúil gur Mac Riagáin an leagan bunaidh, ach tá Ó Criagáin ann anois, chomh maith. Féach Ó Croidheagáin.SI.
