FESTIVAL:ABOUT 80 SINGLES aged 30-55 will descend on Clare Island, in Co Mayo, on Friday, September 19th, for a three-day event so popular with British lonely hearts that it was even the subject of an article in Country Livingmagazine.
Couples strolling hand in hand under mackerel skies while gazing across the bay towards Croagh Patrick may sound like a blast from the past, but it's increasingly popular with young Irish professionals.
Clare Island Singles Weekend takes place twice a year, in June and September, and offers young(ish) professionals a chance to experience good old-fashioned courting - plus a bit of computer matchmaking on the side.
Sunset strolls and a ballroom of romance give singles a chance to get to know one another better. But just in case that doesn't do the trick, the weekend also offers blind dates, speed dating, a competition for the most-matched couple and contests for the most eligible single man and single woman.
The historically minded can take a guided walk around the island, taking in Granuaile's 15th-century castle and other sites. Optional activities include cycling, birdwatching, massage, yoga and fortune-telling. Mass times are always posted.
If you live in Ireland, a fee of €299 will cover your train fare, accommodation, two dinners, two lunches, two breakfasts and entertainment. If you think you may get lucky, single rooms cost €7 per night extra. Staying at O'Grady's guesthouse rather than at a small B&B costs an extra €90 per person sharing.
The weekend has resulted in several long-term relationships, according to Donal O'Shea, chairman of Clare Island's tourism committee, but those concerned, he adds, are understandably shy of speaking with the media.
Endorsed by Fáilte Ireland, the weekend is an experience "never to be forgotten", says O'Shea.
