STUDENTS ARE legendarily cheap so, if you want a holiday that’s not going break the bank, it might be time to go back to college.

Every summer, all around the country, third level institutions boot out their student population, paint the walls a fresh shade of magnolia and welcome tourism guests.

As holiday options go, some get top marks. For example, you can stay at historic and beautiful Trinity College, right in the centre of Dublin, from May to September for €78 for a double room.

All are serviced with bed linen and towels and complimentary tea and coffee supplies are provided. It is possible to stay for one night or many nights and there is rarely a requirement for a minimum stay. Prices include a substantial Continental breakfast and it is possible to upgrade to a cooked breakfast.

Facilities on campus include the Old Library and Book of Kells exhibition, a shop, a coffee shop, sports bar and the new Sports Centre with swimming pool, steam and sauna room and exercise studio. There isn’t a hotel in the country that could beat that.

There are great options for families too. If you’re heading to the north west, for example, a terrific spot for outdoor activities, check out Albanne Tourism in Sligo.

In July it is renting its student accommodation at Clarion Village, a few minutes from Sligo town centre, offering large open plan living areas, en suite bedrooms and some have patios or balconies.

A two night weekend stay in a three bedroom apartment is €169. A week costs €299 which works out at €8.50 per person, per night, for a family of five.
