WHAT OUR JUDGES SAID
Ballyvaughan and the Burren is a unique area of special historical and natural importance. The small narrow roads and lanes make it feel like you are cut off from the world here. Many of the small towns, such as Ballyvaughan, have retained their sense of history, place and heritage, and while some unwelcome development has taken place, generally this area of Clare has come through the past decade pretty well.

There are stunning beaches all around the area. However, there are no ATMs in Ballyvaughan. The nearest one is in Kinvara.

By car, it is a coastal drive from Galway and a pretty easy run from Ennis. The road around Ballyvaughan, especially closer to Carran, can be very narrow and there’s not much space for two cars at times. Buses are available from Ennis or Galway quite regularly and a local bus service is also available. Ennis and Galway are the nearest train stations. There are some good cycling routes and you can rent bikes, although some locals will tell you the roads are not suitable for large cycling tours. You could walk around Ballyvaughan quite easily, but walking at night would have been tricky.

SOCIAL INTERACTION
It's very welcoming. Locals will generally engage you in conversation without too much prompting, especially in the bars.

VALUE
There are cheaper options and plenty of B&Bs and hostel options. With such a good supply of holiday homes, rental prices have come down. There are good hostel options though. All budget types are catered for.
