Welcome to Torchlight, a quaint little medieval hamlet filled with honest, hardworking people. Its real estate value has taken a dip in recent times, however, thanks to an evil force emanating from its ember mine. Playing a Conan- like destroyer, vanquisher (ie, archer) or alchemist (magician), your main duties involve investigating this mine, dispatching with repulsive mine-dwellers (from trolls to giant spiders) and helping villagers with their individual problems. While technically a role-playing game, Torchlightoffers a healthy, satisfying dash of combat to enliven those long walks and detours. The great gameplay allows you to alter your armour, spells and weapons before you delve into the meaty combat. The action is lively and the kills are gratifying, though co-operative multiplayer options would've been nice. RPG fans will be happy with the accumulating tasks, engaging fantasy story and inevitably cheesy dialogue typical of the genre. The majestic, sinister music is a nice plus too. Already a deserved hit with PC gamers, Torchlightis a user-friendly and engaging action/RPG title that will speak to your inner destroyer.
