So far it has been a manic Monday for Ireland’s women at the Rio Olympics with gold medallist from the London Olympics, Bray’s Katie Taylor, losing out to Mira Potkonen of Finland on a split decision in her lightweight bout.

Just in case you still have your teary eyes on the screen, sailor Annalise Murphy, Sarah Treacy in the 3,000 metres steeplechase final at 3.15 pm and Judy Reynolds in the dressage may have been able to cheer you up.

Ireland could yet add to the silver medals that necessitated Skibbereen’s Gary and Paul O’Donovan to press their podium pants for the medal ceremony.

So for the next few hours keep the TV and radio on, brush up on your horse gymnastics, your boatcraft and your running a long way very fast with slightly damp ankles because this manic Monday might just turn out to be a fun day for Ireland. The boxing gloves are sadly back in the press, but it’s time for Ireland’s women Olympians to try their hands at other sporting equipment. Fingers crossed.
