New Yorker Ed Miliano spent 25 years working as an illustrator and graphic designer in the US and Ireland before becoming a full-time artist in 2007, his work influenced by the graphic virtues of clarity and elegance. He has acknowledged his admiration for the American painter Stuart Davis, whose work displays similar qualities. From 2007 until 2010, Miliano was based in Tanzania, and the work in this show comes from his time there.
He concentrates on two themes: the Frangipani Tree, or Plumeria, and the Indian House Crow. Neither is native to Tanzania, he notes, but both have successfully acclimatised. The crows were deliberately introduced "to clean up Zanzibar", not quite successfully. One of the paintings on view will be sold by silent auction during the run of the show and the proceeds donated to Concern Worldwide.
